EVALUATION

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I think my documentary and other tasks do follow the codes and conventions of there professional counter part. In my Newspaper advert is has everything that a newspaper advert had in my research, It had the title of the documentary it had the time and date of when the documentary was going to be shown. Mine was being show on the 20th of December which is 20/12 which is also the same year that the London Olympic Games are on and when Jonathan was hoping the fencers to be ready by. It had pictures that you could relate to the documentary and it had the channel that I was being show on. You can see this in my video evaluation

In my Magazine article I did everything that was done in the real spreads on documentaries. I had the name again so that you now what you were reading, I had a picture which you could easily relate to the documentary, I had the time and day that the documentary was going to be shown on. This is all shown on my comparison seen below.

My documentary also meat the same codes and conventions that real documentaries do. This includes have a theme and staying with that theme through out mine was fencing and I stayed on fencing the whole time. Also I had live footage of me fencing I also had footage that was taken before and that I reused. Also there were things that split up the show like the little fencing man that I made on flash to use as a splitter like they do when they have a short break between each main part of the show. Also I had the name of the documentary in the title sequence which is very important; also it had a channel that it was played on. I chose BBC one and they would most likely play my type of documentary because It is supporting the Olympics and most of the Olympics is show on the BBC also It is show Great Britain In a good light which is what the BBC like to do and try to support the country they are played in, There are parts where there are professionals talking about fencing to help you get the idea of what fencing is about this is also in really documentary. I also have a mixture of voice overs and real life talking in my documentary, which is done very well, in real documentaries. I also have songs playing to keep the mood up and to set the scene in some shots this is also used in documentaries. Overall I think that all my projects meat with the codes and conventions of regular documentaries, Newspaper adverts and Magazine spreads on documentaries

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

It is very effective. My project is all about fencing and the documentary has lots of clips about fencing and the other 2 projects have lots of photos of fencing so there is a fencing theme running thought all of the projects. Also i have used the same colour all thew way thought this is a type of gold colour it is not to dark but it is not to bright ether so it stands out against most things. Also i have used the text thought the whole of the project. In my documentary where there is writing and in the magazine advert there is a lot of writing the text is the same. And in the advert and the magazine where there are main titles on the top of the page i have used to same text because people can relate to the text that you are using. I have also used the same photo of me in my track suit on the advert where is is just a little bit of me and in the magazine article it is the whole photo this means that people can relate me to the documentary. I have also used the some photo in the avert for on of the rings and it is also in the magazine in the bottom corner used to show more fencing. I think it is very important that there is a combination between each project and there is in my project.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I learnt a lot from my feedback and it was very helpful. I went to town and showed people in town my work i also showed my Friends and family. As expected my family were very supportive and told me i was all great, and to and extent my friends told me that as well but thy also gave me some good tips on how to chance and improve my work. The most help came from going into town and showing people my work they were very helpful and told me what they thought which was really good. I learnt that some of them didn't now what fencing was so i have added a bit in to my documentary that will help those who are unaware get the whole story. Also they said that in some parts it need to be a but more exciting so i have cut together some extra clips and i have added them to the documentary. Also they said that the writing on the advert need to stand out more so i made it bolder and the text on the magazine article need to be a different colour so i changed that as well to help everyone read the article. I found that doing audience feed back was very profitable and helped me to improve my projects a lot more.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used a lot of media technologies to make my projects. I had to use the Internet to my research into similar media projects, the interment is very helpful and their is a lot on there which was a great help. To make each of my 3 projects i used different programs on the e macs. I used Imovie to make the film, i used Photshop to make that advert, and i used Indesign to make the magazine spread. I had to use a video camera o take the footage for my movie i has to use i tripod to hold the video camera up so that the shot were not wobbly and they looked good. I had to add voice overs in to my documentary so i used a voice recorder and them i uploaded them on to imoive. I also used a normal digital camera to take photos of me fencing and i too photos of me stand still in front of fencing. I also had to use the video camera o film video evaluations of my plans for each of my 3 projects and then i uploaded them on to blogger. I also used this new program on the Emacs called screen shot where it take a recording of the screen and it can have talking as well and i have used this to show how i have made all my 3 projects. I have also used the same program to evaluate each of my projects. I am using Blogger to display my work. I have used a lot of new media technology's to help make this project but they are all very help full and useful.

Final Newspaper Advert

Feedback

I showed My documentay and advert and magazine to freinds and family and i showed the advert and magazine to people in the street as well becuase they were asy to show to people as they walked past. What i found out was that a lot of people liked what i haddone others didnt and other gave me there opinin on what i should change or make better.

Advert

Most people liked the advert but there was some help and becuase of that i have decided t listen to what they told me:

  • I am going to change the text on the advert becuase it looked a little bit childish.

  • Also i am going to add the real BBC logo on to the advert.

  • Also not cut out the photos and keep the backgrounds on them.

  • And final make the date released more ovious

Magazine

There was a lot of good things said about my magaizne but i have taken the adice and i am going to change:

  • The text needs to be bigger in areas.

  • Also change the text to match the advert.

  • Add maybe some more photos.

  • Also make the advert less about fencing and more focused on the documentary.

Documentary

There were mixed comments about my documentary beucase to som people fencing might be a bit boring or there was not enought information about fencing o help them get it so i am goig to change and add:

  • Add some clips to bridge the whole story together

  • Also change the voice over

  • Make the volume quiter and louder in parts of the clip

  • And change the text that appers on the clip

All this advise will help me to make my final prodect better.

Making of Documentay

I used Imovie to make my documentray. Aftr doing my reaserch i decide to do it about fencing and i have made a short documentary about fencing.

This is how is how i made my documentary.

This is a clip that i have used in the beging of my documentary. This is showing how i made the short little clip that makes the documentary more intereseting.

This is the original clip of the plane flying that I took from the new imovie.

I had to edit most of my clips that I had. I had to cut out parts that I didn’t need like at the begin of each shot where I had the bit where you said action and the ending where I had to go back and tell the person using the camera to stop so I had to get ride of these part I did this by

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ycimyACcM4

To help my documentary better I used the effects tool on imovie. These are used so that you can blend or join scenes together. In my documentary used the fade to fade out at the end of scenes and to start up again at the end of the next this is how I did that
Link To Clip

I had some backing sounds in my documentary I used this to help set the scene in the documentary. I also used to fill the gaps when there was nothing going on I played the music. I had to make the music using garaged band and this is how I got the music on to imovie
Link To Clip

I had some problems with the sound in my documentary, the problem was that some parts where louder and other where quieter so I had to make them all equal. I also had the problem of there being people talking in some of the clips so I had to stop the sound all together in some of the clips this is how I changed the sound in my documentary

Making Of My Newspaper Advert

I made my Newspaper advert Using photoshop. My plan was to have a gold backround and to the the olympic rings on top of that and then have photos of fencing in the rings and to have text around the ring to help understand the advert.

First i made the background this was a gold background which got darker as you went for one side to the other this was to make the how background a little bit more interesting.

After that i had to add some intersting shapes to the background becuase the gold needs something to make it interesting. So i drew some lines with the line tool and made some thinker and some thiner and then made them white to stand out on the page and then i used the feature tool and gave them a bevel and embos ad this made the look like the stand out on the page and look like the are solid objects. This is a photo to show my background.

This is a video of how i made the Olypic circles that are added on top of the background to make the main part of my nwespaper advert.

After i hv made the rings i added photos to the rings to make the advert more about fencing. To do this i had to import the pictures into photoshop and them put them into the rings and get rid of any of the photo that i didnt need or was coming out of the side of the ring. I did this with the eraser tool. This is a photo to show the photos in the rings.

After that i added the text to the adert this was the title of the doumentary at the top of the page i had to make this big so it can standout so that people now what the advert is trying to tell you to watch. Also i have the name of the TV channel that the show is being shown on it is on BBC one so the BBC logo is in the corner. Also i nthe top right courner the time and date that the show will be show on is in the top. This helps to tell you were and when the Tv show is on. this is a photo to show what and where the text will go.

This is a short clip of how I made my newspaper advert and how I put all the layers together

Making Of My Magazine

I used inDesign to make my magazine article. I had a photo of me in front of people fencing so i decided to use as the backdrop to my article.

I used the magnetic lasso tool to cut just my body out this was because the picture was a bit dark and i needed to make me stand out so i cut myself out and then i changed the contrast of the clip so that i stood out and the rest of the picture was a little bit darker. After that i had to split the page so got the line tool and drew a line down the middle of the page.
After that i added Text to the pages and i added more photos to make the whole page look better. The text was the same text that i used in the documentary. Also i added the title which is the same text in the advert this is so that people can look at is a now what they are looking at. Also i added some more little photographs to make the page look more interesting to look at.

I also added behind the text i had a white to black gradient tool that make the writing stand out on the page more and it also allows for the text to go on top of the photo wit out destroying the photo with all the text going around the photo. I have also added quotes to the article to make it more interesting and to have little bits of information as you read the article to help you enjoy the article more.
I am using Indesign to make my Magazine double page spread. The main ideas was to have a picture of me fencing or standing next to people who are fencing and then have the text going on top. What I have does it
Link To Clip

After that I had to add the text to my documentary after my research showed that you need to have the title of the documentary you are writing about and some other text about the talking to people about the show and also a brief information about the documentary and this is what I did
Link To Clip

After that I Added A few photos show below I added the map of where I am going on y tour of Great Britain. I also added some photos of me fencing the top one on the right and the one under it is a photo of me sitting on a bench and waiting to fence. I also added some Quotes from me they are in the blue writing and I also added the time and day that the show is on air so that people now when it is.

Copyrights

I am not using any music that has copyright and i only using music that i have made on garage band. This is easier because i don't have to get permission to use peoples music and i get the right music for what i want because i have made it specifically for my documentary.

All the picture that i have taken myself they are of people fencing or i have asked people to help me and they took the pictures of me because i wanted to be in the photograph.

All the clips used ion my documentary are filmed by me and they are all about fencing. There are some pictures in my documentary but i have taken these as well.

Time Need
This a list of whati did in the 6 weeks tat i had to make my Documentary and the other projects. I have put a list of what i will be using before. This is when and how i will use my time to create my project.
1. Filming the Documentary
2. Editing the documentary
3. Editing the documentart
4. Taking Photos for secondary project
5. Making 2 project
6. Making chages to improve after feedback.

Planning

To make my Documentary i am going to spilt the show up into 3 sections:

  • Clips of Olympic Fencing
  • Clips of me talking to the camera about fencing
  • Clips of me and other fencing
I am going to use voice overs at certain parts of the documentary. There will also be alot of me talking to the camera about fencing and what i am going to do in the next set of shots. This helps the enjoyment of the documentary. I am using iMovie to put the clips together and i am using garage band to create the sound track for the documentary. Also using Flash to create small clips to break up the show.
Things i will Need During production:
  • Video recorder to record the footage.
  • Tripod to hold the video camera still to get a perfect image.
  • Voice recorder to record my voice for the voice overs.
  • Apple Mac programs, iMedia, Garage Band, PhotoShop and Flash.
All these are what i will need to make my project.

Who i will need:
  • Fencers competing in a competition.
  • Fencers to give tips and advise in bits of the documentary.
  • Fencers giving demonstrations of fencing.
These are the people i need to be in my documentary.
Story Boards

Story Board Film
Here is a short clip of me talking about the storyboards for my documentary. This is the animated storyboard.

To make my Magazine advert

  • Picture of me in my track suit
  • Text about the documentary
  • Pictures to make the article look good
I am going to make my magazine on indesign because it is the best program that combines photos ad text and it makes the whole this look better because the whole thing flows together because of the programs on indesign like text wrapping.

Questionnaire

This is an example of my questionnaire that i gave to my family and my friends and also to some people in the street. They all helped me make my decision on what i am going to do for my documentary. I have put the results in to graphs to show better what i found out. I asked 10 different family and friends and 10 people of the street to help gain a far and objective results.

These are graphs that show the results from my questionnaire. There are 10 graphs showing the results of the questionnaire this is what they told me.

  • High Percentage of people do watch documentaries
  • Most people that watch documentaries are under the age of 10 and between 11-20 and 31-40
  • The most watched documentaries are sport, nature and exposed
  • Most people that watch documentaries watch it for 50% of the time that they are watching TV and other are watching only 25% of documentaries compared to the rest of what they watch
  • Lots of people do watch sports
  • The most sport played is football
  • Most documentaries are watched at home
  • Most documentaries are watched in the evening
  • Documentaries are mostly watched with members of there family's
  • Most people do watch the whole series of a documentaries if the documentaries is interesting enough to keep them interested.

What My Show Will Be

I have found from these results that there are a lot of people who watch documentaries watch them at home with there family late at night properly during there dinner and after their dinner. They also like sport and most of the people like football so doing a football documentaries would be boring because there are so many films ad documentaries about football. So i have decided to make and educational or interesting show about fencing that might get more people to start fencing.

Target Audience
The Target Audience is people between the ages of 11-41. This is because these are the ages people who watch the documentaries and they are also the right age for starting the sport of fencing. Also the age span includes parents with children who watch the documentaries late at night.

So i am making a fencing documentary that will make the sport seem interesting and it is aimed at people between the age of 11-41

Codes And Conventions Of Documentary

  • Voice over

The voice over will usually be authoritative in some way, encouraging the audience to think that they either have some kind of specialist knowledge or people should pay attention to what is being said.

  • 'Real' footage of events

Documentary is essentially seen as non-fiction although there are debates around this. However, a conventions of documentaries is that all events presented to us are to be seen as real by the audience.

  • Technicality of realism

This includes 'natural' sounds and lighting

  • Archive footage/stills

to aid authenticity and to add further information which the film maker may be unable to obtain themselves.

  • Interviews with experts

Used to authenticate the views expressed in the documentary. Sometimes, they will disagree with the message of the documentary, although the film maker will usually disprove them in some way.

  • Uses of text/titles

Text watch out for the used of the words on screen to anchor images in time and space. Labels, dates etc tend to be believed inconstantly and are quick and cheap way of conveying information.

  • Sound

Listen out for the use of non-diegetic sound.

  • Set-ups

Not just reconstruction of events that happened in the past but also setting up typical scenes.

  • Visual Coding

This like mise en scene and props. is that doctors any less a doctor if she's not in a white coat and wearing a stethoscope? has someone been ambushed in the street to make them look shifty.

Doc 1

Top Gear Scene Pagani Zonda

This is a scene from top gear where James May is driving the new Zonda. They use voice over during the clip a lot. They do it when they are showing the car driving or turning corners and you have him in the voice over talking about the car and tell the people watching what he thinks about the car. They use real footage of the car driving and they cut between the car driving to the inside of the car where you see James driving the car and also talking about the car. The sound of the car and the noise it makes is real and not faked because the noise is important. They have James who knows his stuff about his car talking about the car so he knows what he is talking about so he is the expert. There are parts at the beginning where they use music to emphasise the Zonda as being the amazing super that everyone should get. It is a car show so it has cars in the show and it is set at a a racing track where they race the cars around so this helps to set the whole scene for the show.

This clip is from the National Geographic about the Ark of the Covenant. They have a mixture of clips of real life and clips of 3D animation to try and tell the story better than explaining the story. They use voice overs to explain the story while the 3D clips is playing because they need a mixture of images and voice over to aid the experience of the clip. There are scenes with real sounds from what ever is going on in the scene, there is also music that is played during the 3D scenes to make the whole scene more believable. They also cut in between the real footage and the 3D animation interviews with experts on the Ark of the Covenant. And they are there to tell you what they about the Ark and any other information that might interest you about the Ark. The Ark is thought to be in Jerusalem in Israel so the documentary is set in Jerusalem which fits with the mise-en-scene of the documentary.

There are voice overs from the experts when the while the clips of the game are playing between interviews with the old players. Also when they are explaining what the game is about and what the game did they talk about it and then they show the game doing what they are talking about. They show the clips like they are being played with the music from the game being played at the same as the clip. They have a music behind the interviews with the experts to add affect to what the people are saying more interesting and less boring because it wont just be people talking in to a camera it will be people with music behind them as well. They use and affect that when there names and what they are comes up there are weird images and shapes that circulate around the names. They are red, yellow and orange and they role around the names for the whole time that there names are up on the screen. The interviews are set in areas where the experts work like the sound man is in a sound box and the director is in his studio and places like that. Also there are lots of interviews with experts on the new technology that they are showing off. There are a few bits of text that show the name of the expert and what he does. they are using real footage all the time there are no 3D effects because they are show new technology of not showing something else. There is the sound from the machines working but only a few bits of music playing when the machines are being used to make the clip more interesting.
